Gov’t to inaugurate 46 new districts today Government will today go ahead with the planned
inauguration of 46 newly created districts despite
some protests across the country.
The Chiefs and People of Bassa in the Brong Ahafo
region and Ningo in the Greater Accra region are
protesting the location of capitals for the new
districts.
Spokesperson for the Ningo Youth Association,
Michael Doku says they will boycott the ceremony
because the right thing has not been done.
“Everybody wants development but development does
not mean that the right thing should not be done”
he said.
Spokesperson for the people of Bassa, Samuel
Antwi also told XYZ News that they will boycott
the inauguration because they have been
disrespected by the government.
“The government sent the district to Kajebi
without saying anything to us. So the Paramount
Chief and the youth have told all the villages not
to go the Kajebi market today”.
But Local Government Minister Samuel Ofosu Ampofo
says government is working to bring all the
disgruntled communities onboard.
“Some deep thinking has gone into the creation of
districts and as for districts creation and
district capital contest; this is not the first
time. You will always have two or three
communities vying for the capital but at the end
of the day it only falls on one.
“We have managed to talk to some disgruntled
people who thought that their communities should
have been given the district capital”.
Meanwhile, pressure group the Alliance for
Accountable Governance (AFAG) has accused
government of violating the constitutional
requirements for the creation of the districts. Source - RadioXYZonline.com
