Security on red alert in Yendi The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC)
has deployed more military and police personnel on
the streets of Yendi to avert clashes between the
two rival gates – Andanis and Abudus.
According to the Northern Regional Minister, Moses
Mabengba, REGSEC has been compelled to put the
security on high alert in the conflict-prone area
of Yendi of the Northern Region of Ghana following
chieftaincy clashes over the weekend.
“I have to step up the security by increasing our
numbers on the streets. The Northern Regional
Security Council knows that our region is a
turbulent one, so we’re very proactive in our
measures towards maintaining peace,” the Minister
told Accra-based Joy FM.
“So we have security men on standby and as soon as
we sense that there is a problem we quickly deploy
them and as we talk we have enough security men to
prevent a clash between the two opposing
factions,” he added.
One person died during the melee with several
others receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching
Hospital.
The clashes sparked over an enskinment ceremony
that angered a rival faction. Although calm has
returned to Yendi, security forces – both military
and police – have intensified their presence in
the area to consolidate the peace.
